SAMSUNG Galaxy S21 Ultra, Best Smartphone from the Galaxy S series

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra made a new history when it was released, this cellphone is the first Galaxy S cellphone that supports the S Pen and the first Samsung cellphone in Indonesia that supports 5G networks.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra also provides a long battery life thanks to the use of Samsung's latest Exynos chipset which is more energy efficient.

Unfortunately, Samsung now doesn't provide a microSD slot and a built-in charger head on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. And the camera even though it presents various improvements but the quality is a bit disappointing in low light conditions.

DESIGN

There are various color choices, Phantom Black, Phantom Silver, Phantom Titanium, Phantom Navy, Phantom Brown, Navy, but depending on each country.

Galaxy S21 Ultra presents a new design style with the protrusion area of the rear camera which is now integrated with the aluminum frame on the side of the cellphone. This makes the camera area look more in harmony with the overall design of the cellphone.

Samsung has also brought back the ring-shaped camera lens decoration style on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra to the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The camera looks interesting, not just a camera hole like the one found on the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

The dimensions of the Galaxy S21 Ultra can be said to be large and thick. The corners of the cellphone are curved so that the Galaxy S21 Ultra can still be comfortably held.

It's just that its weight which reaches 227 grams makes hands sore faster when using the Galaxy S2 Ultra for a long time. Fortunately, the weight is fairly evenly distributed throughout the phone so that it minimizes this problem a bit.

On the side of the cellphone, apart from not finding a headphone jack like most cellphones today, there is also no MicroSD card slot. This makes Galaxy S21 Ultra users unable to increase the internal capacity of their cellphones.

The smallest internal capacity of the Galaxy S21 Ultra which is 128GB is actually enough. However, if you often use it for taking photos, recording videos, or storing lots of movies, it would be better to use the 256GB internal storage variant and above.

In the packaging box for the Galaxy S21 Ultra, there are striking differences compared to previous generations. It looks much thinner than usual.

This is because Samsung has now followed Apple's lead in removing the built-in charging head and earphones. Whereas initially Samsung had mocked Apple when it removed these components.

Inside the Galaxy S21 Ultra box, now there is only the mobile device itself, a USB-C cable, a manual, and a SIM ejector.

DISPLAY SCREEN

The Galaxy S21 Ultra uses a screen technology similar to the Galaxy S20 Ultra, namely Dynamic AMOLED 2X with support for a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10.

The difference is that the Galaxy S21 Ultra's screen is slightly brighter and more power efficient. The Galaxy S21 Ultra screen is also protected with Gorilla Glass Victus, as well as the glass on the back of the cellphone.

The screen size of the Galaxy S21 Ultra reaches 6.8 ". However, due to the curved corner of the cellphone, the widescreen video content is slightly cut off.

The 120Hz refresh rate on the Galaxy S21 Ultra is activated in adaptive mode, which means that the refresh rate adjusts to the screen display conditions to save battery power.

The implementation of the adaptive refresh rate on the Galaxy S21 Ultra feels more optimal than the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. As long as I use this cellphone with an adaptive refresh rate, the battery life remains durable.

This adaptive refresh rate can also be combined with a WQHD + screen resolution. However, if both of these features are activated at the same time, it will drain the cellphone battery faster.

PERFORMANCE

Galaxy S21 Ultra uses Samsung's latest chipset, the Exynos 2100 combined with 12GB RAM (16GB if the internal capacity variant is 512GB).

Previously, many Exynos chipset mobile users complained about the performance and battery life being less than the Snapdragon version. Samsung seems to have managed to fix the problem a bit on this Exynos 2100 chipset.

The performance of the Galaxy S21 Ultra has been fast even though it is still roughly inferior to Snapdragon 888 which has a higher benchmark score.

The next improvement on the Galaxy S21 Ultra is that Samsung has now finally introduced a new version of the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. The fingerprint scan is fast and rarely fails.

Galaxy S21 Ultra already supports 5G networks in several countries.

S PEN STYLUS

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the first Galaxy S smartphone to support the S Pen. Previously the S Pen was only found in the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab lines.

This makes many people ask whether the Galaxy Note series will be turned off or not by Samsung. I don't know, this answer will only be seen at the end of 2021.

The S Pen feature on the Galaxy S21 Ultra is not as sophisticated as the latest Galaxy Note. You could say the current features are more like the features of the old Galaxy Note series whose S Pen does not yet use Bluetooth technology.

Various things can be done with the S Pen on the Galaxy S21 ultra from scribble to smart select. What it can't do are S Pen features that require Bluetooth such as remote control or gestures.

Samsung provides a special S Pen for the Galaxy S21 Ultra which is a package with a cellphone protector and is priced at a fairly expensive price for the cheapest variant.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is actually compatible with the S Pen that came before in the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Note series. I myself have managed to use the S Pen Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S3 on this cellphone, where the price of the S Pen accessories is cheaper.

CAMERA

The Galaxy S21 Ultra uses a quad rear camera configuration consisting of a 108MP wide lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP dual telephoto lens. In addition, there is an auto focus laser sensor and a 40MP front camera.

There are three main improvements in the Galaxy S21 Ultra camera, namely fast focus, better close-up photo quality and can even take macro photos, as well as optical zoom at two different zoom levels.

The main camera is very good at capturing photos. The photos are detailed with fairly accurate colors and good dynamic range.

The main camera of the Galaxy S21 Ultra is also capable of photographing objects at close range without any part of the photo that is too blurry outside the focus of the photo.

Plus, the ultra-wide lens now features dual pixel auto focus. This makes the camera can be used to take photos at a very close distance through the Focus Enhancer feature.

Focus Enhancer will automatically activate on the Galaxy S21 Ultra camera application if it detects a photo object that is very close to the camera. This feature can be disabled manually if desired.

Photos with Focus Enhancer provide detail that is maintained at very close range but with the lack of photos that look too sharpened.

In low light conditions, the Focus Enhancer feature unfortunately produces bad photos so it's best to turn it off and use the main camera in that situation.

The results of the Ultra Wide camera photos on the Galaxy S21 Ultra are still as good as previous generations. The camera is capable of capturing images with a viewing angle of 120°.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra uses a unique telephoto camera configuration, namely two telephoto cameras capable of optical magnification of 3x and 10x.

With these two types of optical zoom, photo quality is maintained whether zooming at a distance or at close range.

If Samsung usually tends to brighten selfie photos, now there is an option to produce more natural selfies. This option can be selected when you first take a selfie or through the settings menu in the camera application.

The portrait mode on the front camera of the Galaxy S21 Ultra produces photos with a neat bokeh effect.

The Night mode on the Galaxy S21 Ultra somewhat overcomes the noise problem in night photos. In addition, this mode can also display better night photo details. But this Night mode needs to wait a few seconds to finish processing the photo.

Unlike the rear camera, the front camera of the Galaxy S21 Ultra is somewhat better at recording photos in low light conditions.

For video recording, the Galaxy S21 Ultra camera is able to produce videos with good quality but the noise problem is again visible.

Seeing the sophistication of the Galaxy S21 Ultra camera on paper, there is a possibility that this noise problem lies on the software side which Samsung might be able to fix through a firmware update.

BATTERY

One last aspect of the Galaxy S21 Ultra that is particularly satisfying is its battery. This is thanks to the use of the Exynos 2100 chipset which is more power efficient than the previous generation. Galaxy S21 Ultra can last for more than one day of use.

When tested the battery using the PC Mark application with lighting settings at 50%, battery 100%, and adaptive refresh rate, the resulting score is 10 hours 7 minutes. In different tests with a 60Hz refresh rate, the resulting score is 11 hours 35 minutes.

For charging, the Galaxy S21 Ultra supports 25W fast charging and 15W fast wireless charging. Because there is no built-in charger head, you can use the 25W charger from the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. With this charger it only takes 1 hour 10 minutes to charge the battery from 10% to 100%.

CONCLUSION

The Galaxy S21 Ultra looks attractive with a camera design that blends into the frame of the cellphone. The battery lasts a long time coupled with fast performance.

The S Pen support allows this phone to provide better productivity and 5G connectivity makes it more feasible to use for the next few years.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra camera, although it provides various improvements, is unfortunately not good for use in low light situations. The Galaxy S21 Ultra also doesn't provide a MicroSD slot and a built-in charger head.
